2009 Legendary 100 Night Three Results
Jones, Bishop, Timm, and Redetzke Score Wins at Legendary 100 on Third Night
New Richmond, WI By: Greg Parent (9-17-09)
Another night of great late summer weather provided the backdrop for what would be an incredible evening of racing action during the third night of the 4th Annual Legendary 100 at the Cedar Lake Speedway. The Late Models, Modifieds, Super (Pro) Stocks and Midwest Modifieds returned for their second night of competition in an effort to earn a top eight finishing position in their qualifying feature race. Several Thursday night top eight finishers who had earned a guaranteed starting spot in the Legendary 100 championship race on Saturday night elected to race on Friday in an attempt to better their starting position. Several drivers improved on their Thursday night performance. The large field of cars on hand put on a great show for the fans with many entertaining races throughout the evening.
Feature race winners on the third night saw Andy Jones pass Josh Bazey with four laps to go in the Midwest Modified qualifying feature race enroute to his third win in the division at CLS this season. Jones improved his starting spot for Saturday night's championship feature by seven positions. In a very competitive and entertaining Super Stock feature race, Rich Bishop narrowly held off Jason Schill to record his second win of the season at CLS and earn an outside starting spot in the big championship feature on Saturday night. Once again, the Modifieds put on a great show for the fans. Bob Timm held on to defeat a hard-charging Darrell Nelson in their 20 lap qualifier. Jake Redetzke showed the competition the quick way around in the 25 lap Late Model feature race to grab his first CLS win of the season.
A host of preliminary heat races and B Mains took place before the qualifying features. Earning victories in the Midwest Modified heats were Josh Bazey, Dustin Scott, Bruce Belland, Jason Miller in Mike Gibson's car, Andy Jones, and Michael Truscott. Super Stock heat winners included Jason Schill, Les Duellman, Ben Hillman, Mike Loomis and Mike Bellefeuille. The Modifieds had several exciting heat races with Dave Lear, Steve Lavasseur, Jody Bellefeuille, Jason Gross and Mike Kelley Jr. taking top honors. Don Copp, Eric Pember, Steve Laursen and Jesse Redetzke topped the Late Model heats. A. J. Roschen raced to a B Main win in the Midwest Modifieds while 2007 Legendary 100 champion Dale Gangl grabbed the Super Stock B Main victory. Josh Angst won the Modified B Main with 2006 Legendary 100 champion Pat Doar darting away from the field to win the Late Model B Main. This set the stage for some incredible qualifying feature races.
As usual, the Midwest Modifieds were up first for their 20 lap feature race. Eric Herbison and Josh Bazey brought the field to the green. Young Skeeter Estey spun in turn four on the opening lap to bring out the caution while Dan Wheeler headed pitside. Estey would put on a show with a charge from the back. Herbison hustled to the lead when the race restarted. Just one lap later, Rick Friendt stopped with a flat tire. Herbison held the lead for one more lap before Josh Bazey moved around him. Andy Jones got by Herbison on lap four for second and began closing in on Bazey. Another flat tire on Rick Friendt's car brought out the third caution eight laps into the race. Friendt was done for the night. When the green reappeared, Jones kept the pressure on Bazey. At the midpoint of the run, it was Bazey, Jones, 8th starter Alan Bohlman, Herbison and 11th starter Jason Miller in the top five. Another yellow blinked on with eleven laps scored when defending Legendary 100 champion Taylor Leuthner spun in turn four and required a ride to the pits on the hook. Bazey and Jones edged away from the field again on the restart with Jones looking for a way past. A final caution for debris on the track with fifteen laps completed bunched up the field. Miller had worked his way to the third spot. Jones made his winning pass on lap seventeen blasting off the high side of turn two and driving around Bazey up high in turn three. Andy Jones' bid to improve his starting spot for Saturday night's championship feature race certainly had been worthwhile. Josh Bazey also improved his Saturday starting position with a fine second place effort. Jason Miller, who did not compete in the Midwest Modified division on Thursday night, locked himself into the Saturday night feature with a sold third place run. Completing the top eight finishers were Eric Herbison, Alan Bohlman, Skeeter Estey from the tail of the field, Dustin Scott, and Michael Truscott.
Fans were in store for a fantastic Super Stock 20 lap feature race. Les Duellman and Justin Stahl occupied the front row. It was Duellman darting to the early lead, but Stahl slipped by to lead lap two while fourth starter Rich Bishop moved up to second. With Bishop working his usual top side and Stahl in the middle, the race for the lead was on. Duellman, Jason Schill, Tim Borgeson and Shawn Huse were locked in a very good battle right behind the leaders. Bishop blasted by Stahl on lap six to lead, but Stahl returned the favor a lap later. Bishop again moved by Stahl the following lap to reassume the point. Stahl kept the pressure on Bishop. At the halfway point, it was Bishop, Stahl, Schill, Duellman and Huse in the top five. Racing for the final transfer spots was also intense. The first caution slowed the pace with fourteen laps in when Eric Olson stopped in turn four. Two laps after the green replaced the yellow, the final caution flew when Shawn Huse spun in turn four. Larry Boumeester was charged with the caution, and Huse was given his spot back. A very exciting and entertaining final four laps saw Jason Schill charge past Stahl on lap 18 while Tim Borgeson moved up to fourth. As Schill closed right up to Bishop, the white flag was waving. Bishop bobbled just slightly in turn one allowing Schill to duck under him. Bishop had the momentum off of turn two and had the lead entering turn three. Racing off turn four, Bishop and Schill were in a drag race to the checkers. Rich Bishop held off Jason Schill by less than a car length to earn an exciting victory. Justin Stahl turned in a solid effort to ride home in third ahead of Tim Borgeson and Les Duellman. Rounding out the top eight finishers were 18th starter Ashley Anderson driving Rick Hallquist's car, Ben Hillman and Shawn Huse.
Following the exciting finish in the supers, the Modified feature race rolled trackside for 20 laps of pure entertainment. Paced by Bob Timm and Shaun Kelley, the roar of 24 mods filled the night air when the green flag flew. Timm tooled into the lead with Kelley a close second. Brent Larson quickly moved from seventh to third in just three laps while a pack of five cars battled behind him. By lap six, Kelly Estey had advanced from ninth to fourth. The lone caution of the race brought the field under yellow with eight laps scored when Kevin Viebrock stopped in turn four. Timm continued to hold a slim lead over Kelley on the restart. At the halfway mark, it was Timm, Kelly, Larson, Estey and 13th starter Darrell Nelson in the top five. As the race rolled by under green, racing for positions behind the leaders were often times three and sometimes four wide. Kelley closed in on Timm on a couple of occasions but was not able to gain the lead. Following a great battle, Darrell Nelson was able to move by Kelly Estey for fourth on lap fifteen. One lap later, Larson got by Shaun Kelley for second and closed in on Timm. On lap eighteen, Nelson ducked under Kelley for third and pulled even with Larson at the white flag. Nelson raced by Larson in turn one and was in the hunt for the win coming off the final corner. Bob Timm was able to hold off Darrell Nelson by about a car length for the win. Brent Larson was a close third. Kelly Estey got by Shaun Kelley on the final lap for fourth. Completing the top eight finishers were Andy Jones, Steve Lavasseur, and Mike Kelley Jr.
Steve Laursen and Jake Redetzke sat on the front row for the 25 lap Late Model feature race. Laursen bolted into the lead on the opening lap, but he spun in front of the field in turn two on lap two to bring out the first caution. Todd Gehl and Jesse Redetzke got collected in the mess while trying to avoid Laursen. Laursen pulled off the track while Gehl went to the work area to change a flat tire. Redetzke was able to continue in his fourth running spot. A caution on the restart for debris, and the race was back underway. A lap later, John Kaanta and Scott Greer made contact on the frontstretch with Greer stopping in turn one with right front damage after contact with the concrete wall. Jake Redetzke opened up a comfortable margin on the restart over Don Copp, Darrell Nelson, Jesse Redetzke and 12th starter Nick Anvelink. While running in fourth, Jesse Redetzke looped his car in turn two nine laps into the race. The race would then go nonstop to the finish. Jake Redetzke reassumed command up front while 13th starter Adam Hensel moved into the top five. Anvelink got by Nelson for third at the line on lap fifteen. Anvelink closed in on Copp and was able to grab the second spot on lap nineteen. Nelson and Hensel battled for fourth. Jake Redetzke went on to record his first CLS win of the season. Nick Anvelink, who had earlier swept both NASCAR late model feature races at the USA Nationals back in early August, settled for second. Don Copp completed a strong run in third. While racing to the inside of Darrell Nelson on the final lap, Adam Hensel did a 360 spin in turn four. This allowed Chad Mahder, Brad Waits, and 17th starter Mike Goodremote to get by while Hensel recovered to finish eighth. Following the race, Hensel drove past the scale to his trailer and was disqualified. Hensel had already earned a starting spot in the Saturday night championship feature race from the previous night, so this moved Ashley Anderson up to the eighth spot.
The final night of the Legendary 100 will take place on Saturday September 19. Racing in the Late Model, Modified, Super Stock and Midwest Modified division will see B Mains, a Last Chance Race, and the feature races to see who will be crowned the 2009 Legendary 100 champions. A full program of UMSS 360 sprint car racing will also take place, as their season-long points title will be determined between Leigh Thomas and Jerry Richert Jr. It should be another great night of racing at the Cedar Lake Speedway!
