Mars, Cain, Kobs, Richards & Dwyer Top Night #2 at the Legendary 100
09/12/08
By Greg Parent
After rain pushed back the second night of the Legendary 100 at the Cedar Lake Speedway to Friday evening September 12, the pits swelled with a huge field of 196 cars in five divisions. For race fans it was well worth the wait, as the CLS track crew had the racing surface in great condition which produced some incredible racing action throughout the night. Earning preliminary feature wins in the three NASCAR racing divisions were Jimmy Mars in the late models, Dave Cain in the modifieds and Rick Kobs in the super stocks. In their first-ever appearance at the Legendary 100, Steve Dwyer made the trip north to capture the win in the Hornet division while the Richards brothers battled for the victory in the Pure Stock class with Danny Richards defeating Tommy Richards.
Once again the passing point system was in place during heat race action. Many of the heat races featured some very intense racing and numerous battles for position, as drivers strived to move forward as far as they could while others raced hard to hold on to their top spots in an effort to be one of the top eighteen cars in points after the heats in each class. Also adding additional interest to the night was the fact that it was a NASCAR points race for not only track points but also state, regional and national points. In the late model division, this helped draw Davenport, Iowa racer and current national NASCAR Whelen Racing Series point leader Brian Harris to the track. Harris drove a local late model car owned by Jim Carlson. Area late model standout Brent Larson was also looking for track, state and regional points along with veteran racer Rick Egersdorf. Track announcer Chris Stepan kept race fans updated throughout the night on the status of each driver's point race battles.
Kicking off what would end up being an astounding 315 laps of green flag racing for the entire evening, the NASCAR super stock division had a 50 car field with five heat races. Making his first-ever CLS appearance, Derrick Lemke led all 10 laps enroute to the win in the first heat over 9th starter and defending Legendary 100 champion Dale Gangl. Steve Thomas wasted no time in grabbing the early lead from his pole starting spot in the second heat and went on to record a close win over current CLS track point leader Dan Carlson. Rick Kobs, driving a new Fegers super stock, came from third to first on the opening lap of the third heat and ten laps later captured the victory over 7th starter Larry Boumeester. The fourth heat race featured a good battle for the top spot. Justin Stahl led the opening lap, but Mike Bellefeuille drove underneath him to lead the second lap. Stahl battled back on the top side to regain the lead the next lap and was able to hold off Bellefeuille for the win. The final heat race saw Rich Bishop lead the whole way for the win in front of Mark Stender. The first red flag of the night waved in the fifth heat when contact with Mike Weber in turn one sent Dave Flynn on his roof.
A very strong field of 66 NASCAR modifieds produced some exciting and entertaining racing during their six heat races. Brent Larson led the opening lap of the first heat before current track point leader and defending track champion Dave Cain came from the fifth starting spot to blast into the lead on lap two. Cain never looked back and ended up with a comfortable margin of victory over Jamie Lemke. The second heat was a very good race. Jake Jay led the opening couple of laps until Brent Prochnow got by. While Prochnow held the point, 11th starter Jason Miller was on the move forward. Miller moved to second on lap 7 with a pass of 8th starter Joey Jensen and soon was challenging Prochnow for the lead. As the leaders completed lap 9, contact between Miller and Prochnow in turn one saw Miller turn sideways. Prochnow was deemed to be the cause and was relegated to the tail of the field for a two lap dash to the checkers. Miller held off Jensen for the win. Scott Splittstoesser moved from fifth to first on the opening lap of the third heat race and 10 nonstop laps later took the win over Scott Gilbertson. Jason Schill bolted into the lead from his outside front row starting position and led all the way for the win in the fourth heat over 9th starter Pat Zdroik. The fifth heat saw the second red of the evening displayed when Dave Storck made contact with another car and launched over the outside concrete wall on the backstretch. His #57 mod then rolled into the safety fence. The race was delayed until repairs could be made to the fence. Storck was okay, and it was reported that his car had actually not been severely damaged in the wild-looking mishap. Les Duellman led all the way to pick up the win over veteran modified standout Ron Jones. The sixth and final heat race featured a great finish. Ted Marrs led the first three laps from his third starting spot until fourth starter Mark Hanson took over up front. In the closing laps, Brad Loveday got going on the high side and coming off turn four on the final lap made the winning pass to grab an exciting win over Hanson. Current CLS track points runnerup Craig Brightbill saw his night go up in smoke eight laps into the race, as his car dumped down a lot of oil on the frontstretch.
A top-notch field of 47 NASCAR late models thrilled the crowd with five heat races. The action started off fast and furious in the first heat with Mike Bear grabbing the early lead. Bear looped his car four laps into the race, thus handing the lead over to Scott Gilberts. Gilberts only led one lap, as 4th starter Kerry Hanson took over the first place spot on lap 6. Hanson held off 5th starter Brent Larson for the win in what ended up being a very good heat race. A nonstop second heat saw pole sitter Ashley Anderson and 6th starter Rick Hanestad provide fans with some great side-by-side racing on a couple of occasions. Anderson led the first seven laps until Hanestad edged past for the lead and eventual win. Just after Anderson crossed the finish line, the engine let go in a cloud of smoke ending his night. Anderson did not scale, so this moved Brian Harris into the runnerup spot at the finish. Another very good heat race saw young Shawn Mahder hang on to the lead for the first nine laps in the third heat, but it was Nick Herrick moving to the cushion and making a last lap pass for the win. Farley, Iowa driver Jason Rauen led the first three laps in the fourth heat before John Kaanta raced to the front. Sixth starter Jimmy Mars, driving a new late model owned by Midwest mod driver Ronnie Rihn, got by Kaanta for the lead on lap 8 and went on to post the win in another caution-less race. The final heat race also ran nonstop to the finish. Duane Mahder led the vast majority of the race, but he did not win it. On the final lap it was his son Chad Mahder, who had moved to the top side a few laps earlier, getting past his dad exiting turn four to record an exciting win at the line.
The lone Hornet heat race for their 12 car field was won by Steve Dwyer over Shawn Mann and Dean Grube. The Pure Stocks had 21 cars on hand with two heat races. Danny Richards defeated his brother Tommy Richards to win the first heat. Young female competitor Ashley Huseby held off fellow RCS racer Nick Field to earn a popular win in the second heat, as the two often raced side-by-side in the caution-free 10 lap race.
With all heat races completed, one B Main in each of the three NASCAR divisions would fill out the starting lineups for their feature races. The NASCAR super stocks had 20 cars make the call for their 15 lap B Main. In a race slowed six times under caution, Destin Lorimor led all the way for the win over Joel Collins. Completing the top six transfer positions to the feature race were Ryan Wiome, 15th starter Cory Davis, 12th starter Jim Gullikson, and by a slim margin for sixth Charlie Obermueller. A whopping 25 cars came trackside for the 15 lap NASCAR modified B Main. Following an opening lap spin in turn one which collected several cars, a big wreck on the backstretch on the second attempt to start the race saw lots of cars involved and the red flag unfurled when the track became blocked with battered race cars. At last the race was underway and Scott Gilbertson blasted into the lead from his pole starting position. Six laps in, it was Jeff Spacek working his way to the front from his outside row two starting spot. Spacek went on to post the victory over 14th starter Trent Follmer, Gilbertson, Brent Larson, Jay Richardson and Shaun Kelley, as those drivers earned starting spots in their feature event. The final B Main of the evening had 23 NASCAR late models vying for the top eight finishing positions in order to race one more time in their main event. Jake Redetzke led all 15 laps in a race only slowed twice under caution. Mike Goodremote, Charles DeSmith, Eric Breeschoten, Jeff Keeney, Justin Ritchie, Mike Bear and 16th starter Dave Cain earned the rest of the transfer spots. It was now time for feature race action to get underway.
The Hornets were the first class to run their feature. In a caution-free 10 lap dash to the checkers, Steve Dwyer completed the clean sweep and became the first CLS Legendary 100 winner in the division's first appearance. Shawn Mann, Dean Grube, Damon Stusek and Kevin Bradwell completed the top five. The Pure Stocks followed the Hornets with their 15 lap feature race. In a race only slowed once under caution, Ashley Huseby led the opening lap before the Richards brothers raced by. Tommy Richards came from sixth to lead by the end of lap 2, but Danny Richards kept applying the pressure. A caution at the halfway mark saw the battle for the lead resume when the green light blinked on again. A couple of laps later on lap 9, Danny Richards got by Tommy Richards for the lead. Tommy kept it close the remainder of the way, but he was unable to regain the top spot from his brother. In a reversal from the 2007 Legendary 100 finish, Danny Richards topped Tommy Richards. Ashley Huseby, Nick Field and Will Hargraves completed the top five.
With Tim Borgeson scratching from the 20 lap NASCAR Super Stock A Main due to a blown engine, a very competitive 23 car starting field took the green with polesitter Dale Gangl grabbing the early lead. Rick Kobs came from fourth to second in one lap, and one lap later found himself in the lead. Kobs steadily began pulling away from the field, as cars jockeyed for positions behind him. The first of just two cautions waved with 13 laps in the books for a spin in turn 4. Contact on the restart between Mike Loomis and Dan Carlson saw the last caution of the race. Loomis restarted at the rear of the field. Rich Bishop had been working on runnerup Dale Gangl, and shortly after the race returned to green flag action, Bishop drove underneath Gangl and into second. Bishop tried to reel in Kobs, but Kobs was just too strong up top on the cushion. Rick Kobs went on to record the win over Rich Bishop, Dale Gangl, Mike Bellefeuille, Dan Carlson, Justin Stahl, Aaron Wilson and Matt Sinna. Those eight drivers earned their way into the championship feature on Saturday night and will start in the first eight rows on the inside. Destin Lorimor came up one spot short at the finish with a fine run forward from 19th to 9th. Greg Nippoldt finished tenth from his 16th starting spot.
A full 24 car starting grid in the 20 lap NASCAR modified main event thundered to life. The race was quickly under caution when Mike Kelley Jr broke a rear suspension and spun in turn one, thus requiring a complete restart. The race would then run 20 laps nonstop to the finish. It didn't take Dave Cain long to grab the lead from his fourth starting spot, as the five time CLS track champion had the top spot by the end of lap one. The battle for the runnerup spot was a good one though, as Jason Miller and Joey Jensen raced close for a good share of the distance. In the end, Dave Cain went on to record the win with Miller holding off Jensen for second. Ron Jones, Rick Kobs, Jason Schill, veteran racer Les Duellman and Scott Splittstoesser completed the top eight finishers and locked themselves into the Saturday night championship feature race. Mark Hanson and B Main winner Jeff Spacek completed the top ten, as 19 cars were still running at the end of the race.
Race fans had certainly seen a full night of racing already, but one bigger feature race was still to come. The NASCAR late models lined up 26 cars strong for 25 racing laps. Rick Hanestad came from inside row two to pass polesitter Jimmy Mars on the opening lap and grab the early lead. Just a couple of laps into the race, Joey Jensen stopped in turn four and tagged the tail for the restart. Hanestad led one more lap before Mars drove around him for the lead. Hanestad kept steady pressure on Mars for the next few laps until the second yellow of the race slowed the pace for a Shawn Mahder spin in turn four. Mars and Hanestad resumed their battle with 7th starter Brent Larson now in third. Cory Mahder and Chad Mahder traded the fourth spot a few times before Cory settled into fourth. As the laps rolled by, Mars began to open a slight lead on Hanestad until the leaders began working lapped traffic. While in heavy traffic on lap 18, Hanestad closed the gap on Mars and was soon right behind him. A couple of times, Hanestad pulled alongside Mars but could not regain the top spot. With 22 laps in, the lapped car of Mike Bear made contact with Hanestad in turn one and spun to bring out the third and final caution of the race. Mars pulled away a bit during the final three laps, as it appeared Hanestad's car was not quite as good as it had been before the caution. Jimmy Mars picked up the win with Rick Hanestad, Brent Larson, Cory Mahder, Chad Mahder, Keith Foss, Kerry Hanson and Brian Harris capturing the coveted top eight finishing positions to earn their way into the big Saturday night championship feature race. John Kaanta and Rick Egersdorf completed the top ten.
Racing action was scheduled to resume with a full day of activity at the Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday September 13 however Mother Nature failed to cooperate.
